Specific Description: Gneiss, pronounced "nice", is a fairly common metamorphic rock with visible mineral grains that are arranged in wide, wavy bands.  Gneiss is formed by regional metamorphism, in which sedimentary, igneous or another metamorphic rock formation has been deeply buried and subjected to high temperatures and pressures.
